A research published recently by the Journal of Financial Planning tried to evaluate how much a person has to save during the different stages in his life based on his income levels in order to ensure a comfortable retirement. Trying to target such a broad subject is obviously not possible without some generalizations on the researchers’ part.
One general assumption by the researchers was that most people will require 80 percent of their pre-retirement salary to live off. This doesn’t take into account the money you set aside. While the research shouldn’t be taken at face value and it may not apply to your case, it can prove interesting reading and is available here.
