How Much Life Insurance Do You Need?

A constant topic that keeps coming up here on our site is the importance of and how to prepare for your future. This also includes preparing for the unforeseeable future or rather unplanned future (in the sense of when the future doesn’t turn out the way you planned…). If you are a frequent reader of this column, surely you are aware of the importance of taking out life insurance.

An article posted on the Promoting Family website tackles an interesting question regarding life insurance: Just how much should you take out? The reason I find this so interesting is because it’s basically a question of how much you want to sacrifice from your current living for the sake of your (unknown) future. Obviously, the more you pay now, the higher the income your family will receive after you are gone, but just how much are you willing to invest from your current income?

The article basically helps determine the minimum you should consider to make sure your family’s future is secure. This is a good gauge which you definitely don’t want to go under. However, the article doesn’t mention that you may want to take out a higher policy nonetheless to ensure your family lives even more comfortably. This is a nice thought, but be sure not to go overboard unless you are sure your current budget can afford it.
