The Thrifty Scot reports that scammers have been taking advantage of the abundance of Britons in debt and devising fraudulent debt-collecting schemes, operating from countries across the globe. The scammers target those most deeply in debt and frighten them into "paying off" debts—which, of course, were never really incurred—without asking too many questions.
According to The Thrifty Scot, many of these scammers claim to be collecting payment for unsecured loans. Others claim to be working for credit card companies, while others are looking to bank off hard-earned mortgages. The fraudsters threaten their targets with court action, and because many are located abroad, they throw into the mix the threat of international law sanctions.
Responding to these scams increases the possibility of repeated targeting. The scammers will typically ask for personal information, so never release any personal details if you are unsure the debt collection company is credible. In order to determine whether a company is legitimate, ask for further information to be sent.
