Saving for your future (the smart way!)

Are you taking all the measures you should be concerning your future? Many would answer this question positively thinking of their monthly or other savings account they may have set up. Obviously we cannot stress enough the importance of a savings account. However, most people don’t realize that a savings account is basically a consumer product offered to you by a bank or financial institution. As a consumer product, it is open to competition and varies in terms and service.

Earlier this month we discussed the issue of refinancing your mortgage. Hopefully you now realize it is not enough to just trust your local bank as necessarily offering you the best terms on your mortgage. Nor is your current mortgage offering you the best current terms possible. You may have seeked out the best deal a few years back when you applied however interest rates change and you may get a better offer when refinancing.

The same applies to savings accounts. You may have negotiated the best deal and gotten a decent interest rate on your investment based on the going rates when you opened your account (or you may have just taken whatever your local bank offered – hopefully, something you will not repeat in the future). However interest rates are high today and you may be leaving money on the table simply by leaving your current saving account as is. Also, the internet makes it easier than ever to find and compare the best rates offered by banks throughout the country.

Sites such as SavingsAccounts.com allow you to browse offers from several banks to find the savings account that best fits your situation. With so much transparenty offered by sites such as SavingsAccounts.com, banks are now forced to compete for your business and no longer take it for granted. As with any consumer product, we believe this is the way it should be. It is now up to you to take advantage of the competition…
